The
spectrum of possible missions for Eurocorps covers all types of
operations: disaster relief, humanitarian aid, security assistance, low
intensity conflicts, peace keeping, medium intensity conflicts, peace
restoring and enforcing up to high intensity conflicts. The Eurocorps
command posts are capable of commanding multiple battalions, brigades,
divisions and army corps level troops.
These capacities are available for the security and defense needs of the European Union, NATO, the UN, the OSCE or the framework nations.
Headquarters Eurocorps was declared operational in November 1995, just two years after the arrival of the first commanding general. The founding fathers intention was realized as Eurocorps was available for the "Petersberg" missions and through the SACEUR agreement also ready for use by NATO. The following years Eurocorps' presence at missions in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo and Afghanistan have proven the operational qualities of this multinational unit. NATO evaluated Eurocorps as an excellent headquarters capable of mastering difficult missions. All these missions make of Eurocorps one of the most deployed headquarters in Europe.
The changing geo-political environment and the proposed adaptations by the North Atlantic Council to cope with these new challenges had an important influence on Eurocorps. In June 1999 at the NATO Summit in Prague the creation of Rapid Reaction Corps was decided. After a long preparation and substantial changes Eurocorps was certified as such a High Readiness Force in 2002. The following decision concerning even more reactive forces, NATO Response Force, was implemented in Eurocorps in 2006. The changes resulting from the new NATO Command Structure (decision in Lisbon 2010) already results in preparations for a Joint Task Force.
